Young people actively help shape Potsdam's streetscapes

24. October 2024

As part of the street design project in Potsdam, pupils from a year 12 class and two year 11 classes were actively involved in the planning of street design in Potsdam's city centre. The focus was on more greenery, more infrastructure for bicycles and less space for car parking. In small groups, the young people were each given a street, which they were allowed to design with the help of initial ideas from the city of Potsdam and in dialogue with the specialist planners from PB Consult.

Initially, they were given sheets of paper to discuss initial sketches and ideas in the group. As soon as a solution was found, it was recorded using the Remix Streets planning software. The pupils were able to change the equipment and design of the street space independently.

The involvement of schoolchildren is of great importance, as their perspectives and ideas provide valuable insights into the needs and wishes of the younger generation. Through their active participation, innovative and creative solutions could be developed that improve the quality of life and safety in the street space. As the project progresses, attempts will be made to incorporate some of their wishes into the plans. In further participative formats, the population of Potsdam will have the opportunity to actively participate in this exciting project.
